My heart leapt into my throat –our host had caught wind of my plan– he knew of my desire to escape this madness, this never-ending ball, this eternal hunt that he summoned every night… he was putting a stop to my betrayal!
I took a deep breath and dared peer up at the hand’s owner, preparing for the inevitable grip around my neck, when the ice blue eyes and casual smirk of a tall, svelte man grinned down at me.
“Sebastian,” I hissed. “You near scared me senseless.”
His smirk widened. Nodding over his shoulder, he motioned to the vague silhouette of our host, the man’s elongated head easily distinguishing him from the rest of the crowd. He danced in their midst with a young girl probably no older than thirteen. My heart fell. Her parents would soon be missing a daughter just as I once missed a sister.
“Our host is occupied, as you can well see. Yet, where is Henry? I asked myself,” he notched an eyebrow. “Apparently approaching this fine maiden when we were supposed to be taking the opportunity to jump from the nearest window.”
Our host whirled the girl in a mesmerising spin to the cheerful cries of the surrounding revellers. They were like hyenas circling for their scraps; I couldn’t watch any longer.
“This woman calls to me,” I whispered. “I think we should take her with us.”
Sebastian snorted, “She is standing by the nearest window. Hurry it up then, we don’t have all night.”

It’s Christmas Eve where I am! For I am an Australian who lives in the future! And I just wanted to wish everyone a Merry Christmas, or a Happy Holidays, or just a pleasant day. Whatever works for you. 🙂
I’m not really a Christmassy person –it’s honestly “just another day” for me, but I try to do what I can to make it somewhat festive for my son. My partner comes from somewhere where Christmas is actually a huge day, and I feel like a terrible person just not caring about it… but I try. By lunchtime we’ll all be doing our own thing, and drinking. I have whisky at the ready, and some cocktail liqueurs. 😛 Liquid Sanity.
Allow me to share with you the trifle I’ve prepared for tomorrow. Usually I make a Sherry-infused trifle, this one is Bailey’s-infused! Nom nom nom. Honestly, this’ll be my breakfast; not the whole thing! I intend to share. Not with my son, obviously. 😛
