Departure (a five-minute #freewrite)

The departure was nigh. Or would that better be known as ‘the ascendancy?’

They waited, thousands upon thousands of people all in neat little rows, and as one they stared up at the sky. They would be leaving soon. Some believed that they were returning home, others believed that they were being saved, and some didn’t even care, they just wanted to leave this place and never return.

Gary was one of the latter people.

Purple streaks danced acrossed the sky interwoven with golden shimmers and began to whirl and twirl and swirl as a delightful vortex. A vortex that called for them, that raised the hairs on their arms, and in some cases their heads. The girl next to him had the longest hair now standing as upright as a perfect tower. It would almost be funny except this was the most important occasion of his life. He would not laugh. He would not ruin the peace. The tranquillity. This moment of perfection.

The ground beneath his feet was as dry and arid as the dryest desert, perhaps dryer. Trees were dead, oxygen was limited. He wanted to leave. He would not be cast aside because he had the audacity to giggle at some girl’s hair!

Lights glimmered from the vortex and he raised his hand to his heart, as one alongside all the others he stood alongside. Their time was coming –they would depart soon.
