Hullo, hullo! 😀

It’s Day 553 of @mariannewest’s five-minute #freewrite challenge! The prompt for today is — system — and this is what I came up with before the eggtimer website went beep-a-beep at me. 🙂

“Don’t betray the system, and we won’t kill you.”

The woman dressed in elegant black and white polka dots offered John a small grin, her perfect teeth as straight and white as the paper she shuffled between long, elegant fingers.

“You won’t betray it, will you darling?”

“No, of course not.”

Yes, of course he would. That’s why he was here after all, but she couldn’t know that. He offered an agreeable nod, or at least, what he thought was an agreeable nod, and waited.

“Wonderful, darling,” she purred.

Shuffling the papers again, she threw them into his face. Each sheet slid down his skin one at a time, each as soft as silk, before they fell into a neat pile in front of him.

“You’ll have to teach me how to do that,” he winked, gathering the pages.

“It’ll come to you naturally, along with many other perks after you’ve been with us a while.” The woman glanced at the door and nodded. As though responding to the movement, the wooden frame shuddered and then creaked open. “Another perk.” She flashed her brilliant teeth. “Your predecessor lasted three days. I do hope you will remain with us for longer than that, dear.”
