Take a Chance pt. 2 (a five-minute #freewrite)

Joey had been silent for at least twenty minutes now. Maybe he had actually fallen asleep. I bit my lip and peered over my shoulder; his door was still closed. This was it. This was really it. I could leave.

I mean, he was never exactly terrible. Just a really annoying housemate that I couldn’t seem to shake. But today, I would shake him. No longer would jam sandwiches fall from the ceiling and get smushed into my hair! No longer would I wake up at four in the morning to find him swinging from doorframes like a rabid sumatran rat-monkey. No longer would I have to worry about unpaid bills and having the house explode from beneath our feet because the kid was a firebug who couldn’t properly light a candle.

It was over. I was leaving. And he would never find me.

I turned the handle. The door creaked as I crept through it, but it only seemed loud because I was creeping, surely. Did it creak before? I don’t think it had ever creaked before. Maybe Joey had been swinging on this one too at some point.

The annoying creak was his problem now.

Gently shutting the door behind me, the sun warmed my face and I breathed the fresh air. This was not freedom. I would not be free until I stood ten million people deep in the depths of another city. Anonymous. Alone. Freedom. There was only one thing to do. Start walking.

The wind caressed my face, birds chirped, and the sun warmed my skin like it had never warmed it before. Hyperbole, I’m sure, but this is how I felt.

A rumble shook the ground.

It couldn’t be an earthquake. Not here. I didn’t really want to turn around and look, what lay before me seemed so much better, more promising, but the urge to turn won… and I immediately wished that I had not. Why do I do this to myself?

There he was. Atop the back of a hippo. Rampaging towards me at full speed with the golden sun gleaming bright in his crazed, curly locks.

All I could do was blink. Where the hell did he get a hippo?
