Why couldn’t we have gone to the library? Why did we have to be up here, flying across a gaping chasm via the heavy wings of frantic flying foxes? It didn’t even seem possible –flying foxes were little guys. This thing, with a clawed foot grasped in each of my hands, was as massive as a flying cow. And I don’t think it liked me.
Joey’s flying fox was substantially less frantic. Where the hell was he getting all of these animals from anyway? He did say that he got the hippo from Amazon, surely these didn’t come from there too… the poor postman. Courier work with Joey-types around could not be the greatest of careers.
Deposited safely on the other side of Esrann Canyon, the flying fox took off into the air, squawking like a pteradactyl — not that I’ve ever heard one, but that’s what I imagine it to sound like — and then it zoomed into the distance.
Joey patted his flying fox on the snout before it flew away. Of course he got the friendlier, calmer one.
“Joey,” I began, trying to slow my racing heart… it wasn’t every day we flew across five kilometre distances via the grace of wild animal, after all. Well. Who knows what Joey did when he wasn’t at home tormenting me. For all I knew, this is what he did all those quiet afternoons when I had the house to myself. “How did you befriend flying foxes?” I finally asked.
“Catnip serves many purposes,” he said with a grin.
